The present painting is an early work by Sebastiaan Vrancx. Here the artist shows the influence of the Brueghel family, especially Pieter Brueghel I and his son Pieter Breughel II. The composition shows woodcutters returning from a day’s work which represents the Month of November. The painting once formed part of a cycle of the Twelve Months. In this series each painting showed the ‘Labours of the Month’ and comprised of twelve panels.
Two compositions of the months of January and September, featuring identical dimensions, are now preserved in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest.
