The composition of the present painting is closely related to a Lamentation attributed to Adriaen Isenbrandt in the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp, and to a Lamentation by Gerard David in the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Santa Barbara, California. Maryan Ainsworth, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, recently observed that the posture of Christ’s body was based on examples by Hugo van der Goes.
