Orient, probably Persia or Iraq: an Islamic upright crest, known as ‘Alam’. Cast from brass-bronze, with four sidelong dragon heads, engravings and Arabic script. - Tribal Art

Such upright banner crests, known as ‘Alam’ (plural: ‘Alem’) made of bronze, brass or iron, belong, in the Middle East, to large Islamic brotherhoods. Primarily among the Shiites. They were carried on long poles during sacred processions or installed during gatherings. The present ‘Alam’ has been cast from brass in two parts. Using the round grommet the flower-like crest would be inserted and riveted above. It has three spikes, four sidelong dragon heads and engraved bands, tendrils and Arabic script filling the surfaces. There is a minimal loss to one of the three spikes. Otherwise no damage. Good traces of usage.
Height: 40 cm; width: 18.5 cm.
