Baule, Ivory Coast: a rare ‘elephant mask’.
An ‘elephant mask’ of the Baule people, made out of hard, heavy wood and dyed black on the front. The face consists of a mixture of human features (eyes, nose) with an elephant head (trunk, tusks, ears). Small, old breakages to the back rim above, and to the tip of the right tusk. Minor cracks due to age. Otherwise no damage.
