Dan, Ivory Coast, Liberia: a typical ‘mother and child figure’ of the Dan, in the form of a standing mother, with her child on her back.

Dan, Ivory Coast, Liberia: a typical ‘mother and child figure’ of the Dan, in the form of a standing mother, with her child on her back. - Tribal Art

A large sculpture, made of hard, heavy wood, originally dyed black and accentuated with white. The figure shows a standing woman, with a hairstyle of two crests and a typical Dan face with pouting lips. With free-hanging arms, as well as with decorative scarification marks, jewellery and sandals crafted in raised relief. On her back, the mother carries a child. Such mother and child figures amongst the Dan may honour a specific woman and her motherhood, or as ‘ancestor figures’ they may also commemorate significant individuals. A fine, impressive Dan piece, with only minor cracks due to age and some small breaks, as well as with colour scuffing at exposed places and good, partly shiny patina.
Height: 71 cm.
First half of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance:
Private collection, Belgium; then: Jan Maes Collection, Holland; then: Piet Dijk Collection, Holland; then: Austrian private collection.

Lit.:
‘Die Kunst der Dan’ by Eberhard Fischer & Hans Himmelheber, Rietberg Museum, Zurich, ill. 140, 143.
