A typical door lock made of light-coloured, hard wood, for a millet granary of the Bambara, workers of the land in the savanna of Mali. A door lock in the form of a human figure, to be understood as a ‘guardian’. The figure displays a high hairstyle (or headdress) and a carefully carved face with serious expression. The head decoration, the body and the cross-bar are geometrically ornamented on the front side with bands of etched lines and rows of punched circles. A piece with exceptional, partly shiny, old usage patina on the front (the bare reverse was attached to the door leaf).
There is no noteworthy damage.
Height: 48 cm (figure), width: 41 cm (cross-bar).
