Burma (Myanmar): A beautiful, big, gilded statue of the Buddha standing on a lotus plinth. Style: Mandalay.
The youthful standing Buddha is carved in wood, coated in red varnish and painted in gold varnish (gilded). The hairstyle features small thickly placed knops. A semi-spherical ‘ushnisha’, a symbol of Buddha’s wisdom, rises on the apex of his head. A rising ‘flame’, however, is not present. This is typical for the Mandalay style.
The diadem over his wide forehead as well as the finishing trimming border of his robes have been decorated in the elaborate Thayo technique using many small glass pearls and in parts colourful mirror plates arranged in the shapes of lines and blossoms. With the thumb and middle finger of his right hand the Buddha holds a small fruit symbolising fertility and the ‘attainment of a grain of wisdom’. His left hand, which usually would be holding the end of his robes, has apparently been broken earlier on and has been subsequently substituted with a newly carved one. Otherwise this Buddha statue presents with only limited damage (scuffed colour and a few slight cracks). Overall a beautiful sculpture in the classic Mandalay style, standing on a semi-spherical lotus plinth. Height: c. 130 cm; Width: c. 68 cm. Late 19th century to early 20th century. (ME)
