India: Federal State of Maharashtra: A bronze head representing the goddess Gauri, an incarnation of the Hindu goddess Parvati.
The goddess Gauri is a special incarnation of the goddess Parvati, the spouse of the Hindu god Shiva. Gauri serves as a symbol of faithfulness and fertility. She is principally venerated in the Federal State of Maharashtra.
The present typical head of Gauri is made of bronze, executed with ‘waste mould’ casting and engraved. Gauri has a smooth, centrally parted hairstyle with a plait at the back and with bands. She has widely outlined eyebrows and on the forehead a drop-like protective religious sign ‘bindi’ (also called ‘tilaka’ or ‘tikka’). Almond-shaped, the eyes bulge to the fore. At the top of the head and on both ears the goddess is wearing ornamental rosettes and her left nostril is pierced, potentially for a nose ring. A perfect old piece with traces of red sacrificial paste above the forehead and on the mouth. No damage! Height: 11 cm, Width: 9 cm. 19th century to early 20th century. (ME)
