We are grateful to Luuk Pijl for confirming the attribution of the present painting (written communication, March 2015).
The present painting by Frans de Momper depicts the Meir, a square in the medieval centre of Antwerp. The eye is directed from Twaalfmaandenstraat across the crowded square and into the background. The painting presumably dates from the 1650s. The scene is closely related to views of the square painted by Erasmus de Bie (1629–1675) around 1660. Frans de Momper’s veduta of the Meir is probably the earliest depiction of this Antwerp landmark.
