This scene shows a 19th century Turkish cavalry attack on a Serbian settlement. Skirmishes between Turkish troops and the Serbian population were frequent between 1804 and the first Serbian uprising against the Turks, 1815 and the second uprising, and 1867 when the Serbs were finally liberated from Turkish rule.
