Thomas Ender one of the most important Austrian landscape painters of the 19th century. Began his studies in 1806 at the early age of 13 at the Vienna Academy under Joseph Mössmer and Franz Steinfeld. Promoted by Prince Metternich himself, he accompanied an expedition to Brazil in 1816. On his return he became court painter to Archduke Johann, and in 1836 a professor of landscape painting at the academy where he workeduntil retiring in 1852. Working with great attention to topographical detail, he left behind him a comprehensive oeuvre of huge artistic and historical importance.
