Abraham Hulk was a student of J. A. Daiwaille in Amsterdam. Between 1833 and 1864 he visited North-America before settling down in Amsterdam. Hulk taught his three sons, his brother and Adrianus David Hilleveld. His works are in the line of 17th century Netherlandish marine painting and are stylistically close to Johannes Christiaan Schotel and Louis Meijer. In his later works the influence of the looser English Brushstroke can be perceived.
