Luba, Democratic Republic of Congo: A caryatid stool with 2 figures. - Tribal Art

A stool made of hard wood, originally dyed black. With a round stand and seat. In between two standing figures with raised arms, one male, one female (the ‘ancestral couple’?). From the Luba or a neighbouring tribe in southeastern Congo. A piece with good usage patina (seat!) and some age-related damage (cracks in the stand and seat, breakage with original repairs made of earthy tree resin and wrapped cords). First half of the 20th century; h: 39 cm, DM: c. 22 cm. (ME)
