Lotto No. 1200

Daniil Klavdievich Stepanov

Daniil Klavdievich Stepanov - Dipinti del XIX secolo

(St. Petersburg 1881–1937 Venice)
The Carpet Weavers, Samarkand, signed Stepanow, oil on panel, 48 x 39 cm, unframed, (GG)

Provenance:
European private collection.

A contemporary of Alessio Issupoff (1889-1957), Stepanov studied at the Academy in Rome. Time spent in France at the Sorbonne and in Russia – first in St. Petersburg and then in Pensa where he worked as a teacher – provided him with rich inspiration and impressions. He was influenced by the artist Kuzma Sergeevich Petrov-Vodkin (1878-1939) who he met during his time spent in Samarkand from 1921 to 1924.
The present lot is undated, but was most probably painted during this period. It shows the daily life of the people he observed in Samarkand. The composition is well balanced with two carpet makers in the foreground and the imposing turquoise domes of the Registan in the background. The composition demonstrates his extensive understanding of material quality, light and colour.
