This motif is very rare and was executed on commission. Andreas Hofer, b. 1767 in Sankt Leonhard im Passeier, d. 1810 in Mantua, Tyrolean freedom fighter, innkeeper "am Sande", Sandwirt of Passeier, headed the Tyrolean fight for freedom together with others in 1809. After the mount Isel victory against the Bavarians on May 25 and 29, he continued the fight for Tyrol even after the truce of Znaim. After his contingent of people on mount Isel had beaten the French he became the regent of Tyrol. When Austria had to give up Tyrol in the course of the peace of Schönbrunn, Hofer, ignorant of the political situation as he was, continued the fight. He was betrayed and located by the French and executed.
