Lotto No. 260

Johann Nepomuk Passini

(Vienna 1798-1874 Graz) Der kleine Chursaal in Sauerbrunn (the small Kursaal in…), titled, dated 10.9. (18)48, pencil on paper, 26 x 33 cm, mounted, framed, a watercolor sketch of a creek in the basin of Bad Sauerbrunn on the reverse, (Hu)

Bad Rohitsch-Sauerbrunn in Lower Styria (today Rogaska Slatina in Slovenia) was a popular spa with numerous mineral springs in Biedermeier times. Alexander Girardi began his career in a drama by Nestroy in the summer theatre of the town in 1869. J. N. Passini executed a series of Tonlithographs of Rohitsch-Sauerbrunn partly after the present studies in 1855/56. The works are excellent in their einfühlsame connection of architecture and surrounding landscape. Passini mentioned the Villa Jankomir and the Triestin hill in the caption.
