Salvator Rosa

Salvator Rosa - Disegni e stampe fino al 1900, acquarelli e miniature

(Arenella, Naples 1615-1673 Rome) A study for the Martyrdom of Saints Cosmas and Damian, c. 1669, each inscribed "L. Carracci" below the drawing and in an cartouche on the mount, pen and brown ink on laid paper, 27 x 18,5 cm, old mount, browned, considerably stained, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

Provenance: Collector’s mark Pierre Crozat (Lugt 1740) on the recto, his mount with the attribution to L. Carracci and inscription "Lud: Caracci/ Ecole Lombarde 1555-1619".

Literature: For a group of other preliminary drawings of the painting, see: M. Mahoney, The Drawings of Salvator Rosa, New York/ London, 1977, No. 87.1410; L. Salerno, Salvator Rosa, Milan 1963, No. 91.

The present drawing may be an early study for the painting “Martyrdom of Saints Cosmas and Damian” which Salvator Rosa created for the church San Giovanni dei Fiorentini in Rome in1669. (Compare Salerno 1963, No. 91). The painting was assigned to the artist by Marchese Filippo Neri, who commissioned the painting for his chapel. Even though the arrangement of the figures in the drawing differs in certain details of the composition from the ones in the painting, there are also distinct similarities: the falling figures, the placement of the two saints at the left margin and the group of angels and sleeping soldiers. A group of comparable preliminary drawings for the painting is published in: Mahoney, 1977 (No. 87.1410) and Salerno 1963 (No.91).
