A mask of the Ngbaka people from northern Congo. Carved in lightweight, light-coloured wood and dyed black and brown. With large, almond-shaped eyes and scarification marks both vertically along the narrow nose and all around the face. Two rows of wood teeth are inserted in the open mouth. A piece with impressive, old shiny patina on the outside as well as on the inside. Minor age damage (scuffed areas, a missing tooth). First half of the 20th century; H: 26 cm. (ME)
