Jacques Matthias Schenker initially studied at the Dusseldorf Academy with Flamm, amongst others, before moving to the Weimar Art School in 1872. His artistic journeys took him to Austria, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Dalmatia and Turkey. Influenced by the landscapes of the countries he visited, he painted predominantly mountain and coastal scenes, characterised in particular by their atmospheric brightness and richly nuanced colours.
