Lotto No. 256 +

A rare "Poly-COR" rocking chair,

designed by Luigi Colani in 1968, produced by COR Sitzkomfort/Germany, fibreglass reinforced polyester, with original signature Luigi Colani, height 78 cm, width 50 cm, depth 63 cm, height of seat 43 cm. (DR)
From a preliminary series of 10. Due to the complicated production process, this chair was never produced in series. Colani"™s snake-shaped chair, made from a single piece, unites the idea Saarinen"™s one-legged plastic chair and that of Panton"™s cantilever chair and probably was the most difficult plastic chair ever made. The bubble-shaped seat shell is balanced on a single leg that extends into the base. Despite the complicated task and great technological challenge, the curved movement lends this object a great deal of elegance and rhythm. Only ten pieces in different colours were produced, probably because of the great production effort. Colani commented on his Poly-COR: "Currently the mostcomplicated chair to be produced. A daring loop construction made of injection- moulded polyester." Designs of that type, in which the limits of technology were put to the test, were related to the future-oriented outlook and the faith in the unlimited possibilities of the age of space travelling.
Provenance: private property, Germany.
Literature: M. Eislingen, Stühle des 20. Jahrhunderts, 1994, cover illustration; A. Bangert, Colani - Die Kunst, Zukunft zu gestalten, 2004, pp. 114/115; Experiment 70. Designvisionen von Luigi Colani und Günter Beltzig, Museum für konkrete Kunst Ingolstadt, 2002, pp. 111/112.
