Yaka Nkanu Janus fetish, Democratic Republic of Congo.
Ritually anointed with white kaolin, oil and tukula. Wood, 20 cm high. A rare and early Janus figure with both the male and the female depicted, representing the ancestral couple. Sacred ancestral relics were placed in the ventral aperture.
