The present etching with “The Landscape with the Square Tower” may have been executed by Rembrandt near the border of the Netherlands on his journey with Hendrickje Stoffels to Bredevoort in 1649. The route of their journey can be retraced by means of the drawings which show characteristic elements of the landscape and the houses in the surrounding. The peasant houses recall typical buildings from the surrounding of Amsterdam; the hilly landscape in the background may derive from the topography between Amersfoort and Rhenen. The present etching is hence a typical example of Rembrandt’s method to compose his subjects of existing motives with elements from the imaginary world or to combine his subjects with different topographical details.

The print is a very excellent, vigorous impression of the III state (of III), with a delicate plate tone and the scratch through the signature not visible. In an excellent state of condition.
