The naval battle of Helgoland was fought on 9 May 1864 during the Second Schleswig War, between a Danish squadron lead by Edouard Suensons and an Austrian-Prussian squadron under the command of the Austrian captain Wilhelm von Tegetthoff. The painting shows the Austrian frigate Schwarzenberg which has caught fire. To the right is the Austrian frigate Radetzky, and in the centre the Prussian gunboats Blitz and Basilisk. In the background the two Danish frigates Nils Juel and Jylland, and the Danish corvette Hejmdal.
