Johannes van Bronchorst

Johannes van Bronchorst - Dipinti antichi

(Utrecht 1627–1656 Amsterdam)
Diogenes looking for an Honest Man,
oil on canvas, 96 x 83 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, The Netherlands, until 2018

Johannes van Bronchorst trained in Utrecht where he was a pupil of the noted Caravaggesque painter Gerrit van Honthorst. Like his master before him, he made a formative journey to Italy, where he was active in Rome from 1648 to 1650. There he knew the Dutch poet Reyer Anslo and is also recorded as a member of the ‘Bentvueghels’, a Bacchic brotherhood of Netherlandish painters in Rome which included several fellow Caravaggisti.

Two other major works by van Bronchorst are known. A signed Saint Bartholomew in the Liechtenstein collection, Vienna, which bears the date ‘1652’ on the column behind the saint, and Laban in search of the Terafim, circa 1655, in the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam. The turbaned figure of Diogenes on the right of the present composition, holding his lamp, exhibits similar physiognomy to that of Laban on the left of the Boijmans picture.

The artist has been the subject of recent scholarship (see G. Papi, Senza più attendere a studio e insegnamenti. Scritti su Caravaggio e l’ambiente caravaggesco, Naples 2018, pp. 233-242).
