Lotto No. 512 -

Antwerp School, first half of the 17th Century

Antwerp School, first half of the 17th Century - Dipinti antichi

A winter landscape,
signed with a monogram and dated lower right: M 1618,
oil on panel, 33.5 x 55.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
with Chaplin, London, by 1840 (as Jan Brueghel I);
Collection of Sir Culling E. Eardley, London, by 1850 (as Jan Brueghel I);
sale, Sotheby’s, Amsterdam, 15 November 1976, lot 38 (as Circle of Anton Mirou);
with Pieter de Boer, Amsterdam (as Anton Mirou);
Private collection, The Netherlands, before 1981 (as Anton Mirou);
with Galerie Friederike Pallamar, Vienna, circa 1981–1987 (as Mattheus Molanus)

Literature:
J. G. C. A. Briels, Vlaamse schilders in de Noordelijke Nederlanden in het begin van de Gouden Eeuw 1558–1630, Haarlem 1987, p. 364, ill. (as Mattheus Molanus);
J. Diefenbacher, Anton Mirou 1578 – vor 1627, Ein Antwerpener Maler in Frankenthal, Landau 2007, p. 160 (as questionable)

The monogram on the present painting is similar to the signatures on accepted paintings by Mirou, to whom this work was previously attributed. It is inspired by the Antwerp tradition of landscape painting, which was primarily invented by Jan Brueghel I. The winter landscapes of Joos de Momper have probably also been a source of inspiration.
