The present painting by the Master of the Fertility of the Egg represents a series of caricatured dwarfs and animals, each seemingly involved in equal roles as they intently enact various frenetic activities. Cats, frogs, cocks, turkeys, geese, owls and other creatures are all dressed up: these figures belong to the artist’s rich repertoire and they are tasked and entrusted with revealing the futile absurdity of human behaviour.
The Master of the Fertility of the Egg introduced certain Flemish subjects to Brescia. As in the previous lot, the present painting is also characterised by a multitude of figures positioned against a dark background.
