A different version of this composition, also dated 1754, is in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin (see J. Straßer, Januarius Zick, Weißenhorn 1994, p. 353, fig. 21). The present painting is probably a pendant to Moses Striking the Rock, exhibited in Paderborn in 2001 (see A. Wandschneider, Januarius Zick, Gemälde und Zeichnungen, exhibition catalogue, Paderborn, 2001, no. 8). The latter painting is of the same size, has a matching palette, and is also dated 1754.
