The present composition is an autograph replica of Willem van Herp’s painting of the same subject (oil on canvas, 203 x 286 cm) for the Augustine Church in Antwerp. Van Herp’s Antwerp work is part of a series of ten paintings on the life of the Saint which are all still in situ. The artist contributed to the series with two canvases: The Calling of Saint Augustine and The Baptism of Saint Augustine by Bishop Ambrosius of Milan.
We are grateful to Hans Vlieghe for confirming the attribution on the basis of a photograph.
