Exceptional covered bowl from a service which was commissioned by Emperor Napoleon I from the Sèvres porcelain factory to mark the birth of his son the King of Rome. The design goes back to Claude Charles Gerard (1757-1826). He was active in Sèvres as a miniaturist and painter since 1771, from 1805-1824 as “chef d’atelier de peinture”. The two miniatures were executed by the famous porcelain painter Louis Bertin Parant (1768-1851), who specialised in imitating cameos. The first miniature shows Minerva bringing the newborn King of Rome by boat to the Roman river god Tiber. The second miniature depicts Minerva handing over the King of Rome to Emperor Napoleon I in the guise of Hercules. Both miniatures are signed by Louis Bertrand Parant. Important museum-quality covered bowl epitomising the zenith of the Neo-Classical Napoleonic style.
