with two stylised ancestral korwar figures and two numfur 'dragon' heads. 19th century. North West New Guinea, wood, 10 cm high.
The other neckrest, also collected by Paul Kibler, is in the Metropolitan Museum. Neckrests in Melanesia are used as communicative devices, often with the depiction of ancestor or spirit animals.
