The theme of the seated figure typifies the core of the ancient Baule art style created by the Mamla in Central Ivory Coast. To the Baule these are the spirit's (asye usu's) 'throne', a place for the spirit to rest. Old collection numbers. Ex. Lode van Rijn, Amsterdam; Mattel collection Montevideo. (VJ)
