The present lot is a view into a romantic river valley. A lonely walker crosses the stone bridge which leads over the river Ahr, with Are Castle in the Rhineland visible in the background. It was built between 1095 and 1105 by Graf Theoderich von Are, and is still the landmark of the Altenahr municipality. Over its history the castle, located south of Cologne, became the property of the Archbishop of Cologne. Shortly after 1800 it had been reduced to nothing more than ruins and, located high above the river valley, reflected the early 19th-century romantic ideal of a landscape.
