earthenware, traces of cold painting, finely modelled with raised right front leg with head inclined to the left, lively folds to the saddle cover, height 64.5 cm, partly restored, (Hr)

Oxford thermoluminescence report available. Provenance: Austrian private collection. There is a comparable horse in the collection of the Idemitsu Museum, Tokyo, dated 1st half of the 8th century, with a similarly curvate saddlecloth and raised right front leg, albeit with a female rider, see William Watson, Tang and Liao Ceramics, Fribourg 1984, p. 192, ill. 211. A similar, but smaller model is to be found in the holdings of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, no. 67.62.1
