Provenance:
Austrian private collection. There is a comparable horse in the collection of the Idemitsu Museum, Tokyo, dated 1st half of the 8th century, with a similarly curvate saddlecloth and raised right front leg, albeit with a female rider, see William Watson, Tang and Liao Ceramics, Fribourg 1984, p. 192, ill. 211. A similar smaller model is to be found in the holdings of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, no. 67.62.1
