An illuminated canopy from the former drugstore “Stadtdrogerie Robert Arnaud” in Sigmaringen

An illuminated canopy from the former drugstore “Stadtdrogerie Robert Arnaud” in Sigmaringen - Design

first quarter of the 20th century, height c. 30 cm, width c. 210 cm, depth c. 180 cm. (MHA)

Planned and commissioned in 1928 as a four-floor extension to an existing commercial building. The master builder was a former court architect to the Princes of Hohenzollern and more than 70 years old at the time. He was obviously influenced by the Tagblatt-Turm high-rise building and the Weissenhof settlement in Stuttgart. At the time of its construction, the building design was already regarded as too modern a “high-rise” in Sigmaringen’s old town and was approved only without the top two floors. It was demolished in 2005.

“Robert Arnaud was born in Sigmaringen on 30 June 1885. After attending high school, he completed a three-year apprenticeship in Heilbronn. He subsequently worked in various drugstores and as a representative for Kathreiner’s Malzkaffee. In November 1908, Robert Arnaud purchased a building on Schwabstrasse in Sigmaringen, which in the following years would accommodate his drugstore, the “Stadtdrogerie Robert Arnaud”. In 1928, the shop was enlarged with an extension in the Bauhaus style. Robert Arnaud’s marriage to Amelie Dieringer (1889-1970) in 1910 three daughters were born, Gertrud (1911-1990), Hildegard (1912-1995) and Gretel (1916-1995), and one son, Robert (1927-1945). Robert Arnaud died on 11 May 1945, shortly after his son had been shot dead during the French invasion of Sigmaringen.” Sigmaringen, February 2007 Corinna Knobloch
