Tomas Hiepes is recorded as living and working in Valencia from 1643, and was celebrated for his still-life and flower paintings. His work is characterised by studied effects of strong, direct lighting and pronounced shadows. Although the painting recalls contemporary Neapolitan still-lifes in subject-matter and composition, Hiepes’s careful depiction of the details of objects and his studied technique contrast with the broad brushwork of Neapolitan artists and his Valencian contemporary Miguel March.
The present work shows the artist’s refined sense of colour, his sense of form and use of simple composition create a concentration on details (see W. B. Jordan/P. Cherry, Spanish Still Life from Velázquez to Goya, exhibition catalogue, London 1995, pp. 118–28).
