commissioned from the artist in the early 19th century by a European noble family;
sale, Sotheby’s, London, 24 September 2013, lot 191;
where bought by the present owner

The genre and landscape painter Johann Nepomuk Schödlberger was strongly influenced by Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin. His most important patrons were King Ludwig I of Bavaria and the Grand Duke of Saxony-Weimar.
