Lotto No. 172

Hans Jordaens I

Hans Jordaens I - Dipinti antichi II

(Antwerp 1555–1630 Delft)
Solomon and the Queen of Sheba,
oil on panel, 55.5 x 84 cm, framed

Provenance:
sale, Dorotheum, Prague, 24 May 2003, lot 7 (as Antwerp School, circa 1590);
art market, Vienna (2004);
where acquired by the present owner

The present composition is probably the one sold at Fernand in Ghent on 23 July 1804 as lot 168 (see C. Hofstede de Groot, no. 1263634), described as of ‘ordonnance quoique très capitale’ and praised for its light and colour. The painting fits the measurements and demonstrates a characteristic painterly quality, most notably in the figures, drapery, and warm colour scheme. The expensive support consists of only a single sheet of oak panel. Such a support is very rare and only occurs in cabinet paintings of the highest quality.

Hans Jordaens I was one of the most successful painters of his day, and his paintings are often mentioned in inventories. His known oeuvre is still very small, the most recent addition being the signed work Christ on His Way to Golgotha, sold in Uppsala, Sweden in December 2018.
