(Paris 1659–1735)
The Siege of Mons,
oil on canvas, 70 x 96 cm, framed

Provenance:
sale, Artcurial, Paris, 31 March 2016, lot 115;
where acquired by the present owner

The present composition depicts an event from the Nine Years’ War. Louis XIV, in crossing the Rhine to pursue his dynastic claims in the Holy Roman Empire, united the German princes who, led by Habsburg Austria, formed a grand coalition with England, the Dutch Republic, the Duchy of Savoy, and the Spanish Netherlands.

The depicted Siege of Mons in 1691 resulted in Louis’s capture of the town. The king is known to have ordered paintings of this triumph to decorate his château at Marly. The present work appears to show the Sun King, along with his court, arriving to take personal command of his forces.

Martin des Batailles trained under the Fleming Adam François van der Meulen, who was instrumental in helping to create and propagate Louis XIV’s image as ‘le Roi Soleil’. Martin specialised in compositions that illustrated both the majesty of the French army and the new technology of its great siege engineers such as Vauban. He was awarded the title ‘Peintre des conquêtes du Roi’ or ‘painter of the King’s conquests’.
