Inscribed on the reverse of the canvas: By Sir Joshua Reynolds bought/... at Jacksons RA Sale/1831.

Collection of the portrait painter John Jackson RA (1778–1831) (according to an inscription on the reverse);
Private collection, Germany

Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough, was a hero of the Seven Years’ War. Portrayed by Sir Joshua Reynolds in 1757, Spencer died the next year on campaign near Emden. He was an ancestor of Sir Winston Churchill.

The portraitist John Jackson RA (1778–1831) belonged to the generation of Royal Academy artists that came after Reynolds, the academy’s founder.
