The Monkey Orchestra was designed in 1908, and executed in 1912-1913, hence the 2012-2014 anniversary; Otto Pilz was born in 1876 in Sonneberg, Thuringia, trained as a sculptor from 1895 at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Dresden under Carl Ludwig Theodor Graff, Hugo Spieler, Alfred Diethe and Paul Hermann Naumann, and from 1898 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin under Gerhard Janensch and Ernst Herter. From 1905-1913, the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Meissen acquired 29 small-scale model designs by him. Otto Pilz died in Dresden in April 1934.
