Prototype ”GU” chair, designed by Ma Yangsong,

Prototype ”GU” chair, designed by Ma Yangsong, - Design

MAD Architects, 2018, for Sawaya & Moroni, Italy, solid wood, pink laquered, height 76 cm, lenght 54 cm, depth 57 cm, height of seat 46 cm. (DRAX)

A unique piece.

The GU CHAIR is part of the design research conducted with conviction by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, which tends to cross-fertilise between architecture and landscape, making the built environment an extension and sometimes a metaphor of the natural context in which it is set, yet without ever compromising on its contemporary spirit. On the scale of the everyday object, this relationship with nature becomes organic: GU (which is in Mandarin language a synonym for ‘bone’, so also has the secondary meaning of ‘structure’ among its more important derivatives) becomes an opportunity for experimenting with how to translate every living being’s fibrous connective tissue into the difficult typology of the chair. From this standpoint, this wooden chair takes on the appearance of a unique structure, a figure whose components mesh seamlessly, so that each element is part of the next, in a unique complementary synthesis of matter and form.

Presented as a prototype in 2018, the GU Chair has been developed in terms of its structural solidity in the 2019 version made of high-density polyurethane with an inner metal insert. The two prototypes proposed have been done in 2018 and have been presented during Salone del Mobile in Milano in the same year, they are unique pieces with lacquered wooden structure.
