Konstantin Gorbatov lived in Riga from 1896 to 1903 and studied civil engineering. In 1904 he moved to Saint Petersburg and studied at the central school for technical drawing and at the art academy architecture and painting under the landscape painter Nikolai Dubowskoi. Gorbatov received a stipend and could travel to Rome and Capri where he continued his studies. In the course of the Russian Revolution he emigrated to Capri; in 1926 he went to Berlin, where he joined intellectual circles of Russian emigrants. At that time Gorbatov travelled a lot and visited Palestine, Syria, Capri, Venice, Finland and London. After the outbreak of World War II he was not allowed to leave the country because he was a Soviet citizen.
