“Mercury in Meditative Pose”,

“Mercury in Meditative Pose”, - Mobili e Antiquariato

circle of J. WILHELM BEYER (1725 - 1796) last quarter of the 18th century, male semi-nude in seated position, sandstone naturalistically carved in full round, the head turned to one side, sitting on a base with bent leg and the head resting on it, height c. 160 cm, the lower half of the right forearm and other parts missing, various signs of age and weathering. (DOC)

Mercury (Greek Hermes) is said to have built a lyre from the shell of a turtle, using the intestines of a cow as strings. Charmed by the sounds of that instrument, Apollo desired to possess it. When Mercury was carving a shepherd’s flute from a rod, Apollo offered him his golden shepherd’s crook in exchange for it and made Mercury the god of cattle breeders and shepherds. Mercury is the messenger of the gods and the god of merchants and travellers. J. CHRISTIAN WILHELM BEYER (1725 - 1796) was a German sculptor, porcelain artist, painter and garden architect. Beyer made the largest contribution to the decoration of Schönbrunn Palace Park, with statues based on mythological and historical figures from antiquity.
