An Important Writing Cabinet,
attributed to T. MILLET in Paris c. 1915, freestanding kidney-shaped and bombé hardwood frame on cabriole legs, exquisitely veneered with rosewood in lozenge patterns, polished finish, the reverse decorated with floral marquetry of partly dyed precious woods, top in the form of 2 flattened turrets reminiscent of F. LINKE, each with 1 door, decorated with floral marquetry on the front and on the inside of the door, enclosing a fitted interior with elaborately executed cube pattern, 3 external drawers, lavishly ornamented with bronze doré fittings, two bronze candleholders for two candles each, featuring a clock in the middle of the upper section, c. 124 x 149 x 85 cm, clock without guarantee for working order, in restored condition. The present item is subject to conservation legislation (ASB). Théodore MILLET founded his renowned company in Paris in 1853. He specialised in the high-quality reproduction of furniture and bronzes from the 18th century. MILLET was one of the few cabinet-makers allowed to supply the Palace of Versailles, thus acting as purveyor to the court. His manufactory received various prizes - including a gold medal at the Paris World’s Fair in 1889 and the Grand Prix at the Paris World’s Fair in 1900.
