Workshop of Artus Wolffort
(Antwerp 1581–1641)
The Adoration of the Magi,
oil on panel, 91.8 x 121 cm, framed
Artus Wolffort, like Rubens before him, was an apprentice of Otto van Veen in Antwerp. Both artists amplified their tutor’s classicism with pronounced dynamism and a certain individuality. Wolffort’s early works were executed in a proto-Baroque style. The present composition, known in other versions, is a good example for Wolffort’s early manner. In later years (after 1630) he used a more dynamic Baroque style influenced by Rubens.
