Lotto No. 213

Workshop of Sebastian Vrancx

Workshop of Sebastian Vrancx - Dipinti antichi

(Antwerp 1573–1647)
The frozen moat by the Kipdorppoort in Antwerp,
oil on copper, 51 x 65 cm, framed

Provenance:
sale, Christie’s, South Kensington, 6 July 1995, lot 453;
Private collection, Belgium

An attribution to Pieter Snayers, a member of the workshop of Sebastian Vrancx, has been suggested.

Denis van Alsloot (circa 1568–1625) was long regarded as the inventor of the Kipdorppoort ice fair compositions, from which the present work is derived. However, Sabine van Sprang has rejected the tradition of van Alsloot‘s authorship of the scene in her monograph on the artist (see S. Van Sprang, Denijs van Alsloot, Peintre Paysagiste au service de la cour des Archiducs Albert et Isabelle, Turnhout 2014), and Vrancx is now held to be its originator. Although Jan Brueghel II made claims to the contrary, Sebastian Vrancx is now recognised to have had an active workshop.
