Jehiryusai Hiroshige

Jehiryusai Hiroshige - Antiquariato e mobili

(1797-1858) Tadasugawara no ysai, censor seal (at lower left margin): kiwame (here not original). The series consists of ten sheets published in around 1834 by Kawaguchiya Shôzô. According to Gordon Friese, Dortmund, who was able to examine the present sheet on the basis of a photograph, this item is an impression from the original woodblocks. In the present specimen, the original publisher’s seal Eisendô has been replaced by the artist’s seal. Both the bokashi in the treetops of the back row of trees and the bokashi in the water at the edge of the bank are missing. In the upper section of the sky the rain was no longer printed. Instead, a black bokashi horizontal line was added to the upper edge of the picture. To an extent, the colour palette corresponds to that of the first prints, but the colours used here have an inferior quality. The printed image reveals that the printing plates had lost their sharpness over time. In particular, the faces of the people in the front teahouse show no contours. The red stain to the right of the series title seems to be the residue of a private collector’s stamp. The sheet has seemingly almost full margins; in fact, it has been trimmed on all sides. The outer margin and the kiwame seal are not original. First prints can be found for comparison at Christie’s London, Sale 15306 of 15-22.6.2017 (online), lot 46, Mus. of Fine Arts Boston (online), no. 21.8205. minimally stained, full margins, (CT)
