Ib Geertsen (1919 - 2009) is considered to be one of the most important Danish representatives of Concrete Art, an art movement that is based on mathematic and geometric principles. His work anticipates trends in contemporary art, ranging from painting to sculpture and work in public spaces, and comes under the same umbrella as Serge Poliakoff or Alexander Calder.

Geertsen’s mobiles, which he himself called ‘aerial drawings’, are playful, using his characteristic colourful shapes. Balance, movement, light and air find a poetic expression in his creations.

‘When everything goes right a mobile is a piece of poetry that dances with the joy of life and surprise,’ says Alexander Calder, who once perfected this art form. The term ‘mobile’ goes back to Marcel Duchamp, who used it from the 1930s onwards when describing Calder’s early works.

Geertsen stands for an open style that transcends genres. He mainly created colourful abstract paintings. His paintings and (walk-in) sculptures have shaped the face of many Danish cities. Some of his works can also be found in major Danish museums.
