The present drawing goes back to the painting “The Remnants of an Army” (1879) by the British female war painter Elizabeth Southerden Thompson in Tate Britain in London. It almost exactly repeats the composition. It shows the surgeon William Brydon, who was the only survivor among 16500 civilians and soldiers at the end of the long retreat of the British from Kabul in January 1842 in the First Anglo-Afghan war. Despite the great proximity of the drawing with the painting it seems implausible that the artist did not sign a drawing like the present one, especially when it was executed with such great care and a high degree of finish. The artist was often copied even during her life time and it seems possible that the present drawing is more a copy after the painting rather than preliminary to it. An early study for the painting “Remnants of an Army” was recently discovered in the family archives of the artist.
